The Rising Sun, Fulwood Sheffield

The Rising Sun is a local pub in Fulwood which has in recent times, undergone a fantastic refurbishment and extension. We have regularly visited the pub over the past few years and it is clear that the owners and staff are passionate about the local community. You will be given a warm welcome by the friendly staff, who will be pleased to offer their advice and recommendations on the wide range of food and drinks available. It is an Abbeydale Brewery pub and has 13 cask ales from independent breweries to suit every taste. If beer isn’t your usual choice, there is also a fantastic selection of wines, spirits and soft drinks.

The Restaurant area offers a more formal dining setting where you can enjoy local, seasonal produce. The menu has been transformed after the refurbishment and offers traditional British pub meals with a modern twist. We’ve all enjoyed an excellent Sunday roast at the pub and we couldn’t fault the food or service. To book a table we used the online booking system which was quick and simple to use. Gluten free options are also on offer and there is a children's menu with a wide range of options and high chairs are available.

A prime example of how the pub interacts with the local community is the annual Sunfest beer festival. Sunfest is now an established annual event which draws in fans of real ale & cider from across the country. Over 100 real ales and ciders can be found in an outdoor beer tent, with Abbeydale Brewery regulars available on the bar. The weekend also features a selection of live music and entertainment and the ever-popular Saturday Hog Roast from Sheffield’s Whirlow Hall Farm. The pub supports several local charities and has a quiz night every Wednesday with raffle ticket donations going to St Luke’s Hospice.

We would highly recommend The Rising Sun for anyone in the local community or further afield, as it is a relaxed, friendly environment that caters for all. The new menu is excellent and offers traditional British food at an affordable price.

British Oak, Mosborough Sheffield

Located on Mosborough Moor, which is one of the main roads in the village, The British Oak or ‘Brit’ as it is commonly known in Mosborough, has become one of the most popular places to eat and drink this side of town.

The British Oak was previously known as a very typical traditional English pub, but since getting rid of the dart board and making the most of the character of the building, The British Oak has become a very trendy and popular place to go.

Owned by The True North Brew Co, who also own The Common Room and Forum in the city centre have really grown their reputation in Sheffield over the past few years and also own the following venues; The Devonshire (previously The Old House), The York (Broomhill), The Broadfield (Abbeydale Road), Crown & Anchor (Barnsley), The Riverside (Kelham Island), The Blue Stoops (Dronfield), The Waggon & Horses (Millhouses).

From a food perspective, The British Oak offers a lot more than just pub grub and will often have events on whereby there will be discounts on speciality foods. For instance, when some of the team visited it was ‘Game Week’, whereby you will find foods such as Venison Burgers and Pheasant on the menu. Other events such as, Lobster week are also very popular. Since True North Brew Co took over, they have also introduced an outside Pizza oven, which is very popular for both eating in and taking away. The food prices are not particularly cheap, but the quality of food is exceptional, and we believe the prices reflect this. It is also suitable for coeliac and they do take all allergies seriously and cater for everyone.

There are a range of lagers and ales available and selection of cocktails, which have offers on a Thursday night. Selected Ales and Pilsner are also reduced on quiz night, which is on a Sunday.

For someone who has never been before or locals who have been a thousand times, the British Oak is highly recommended. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit!

We would highly recommend The Rising Sun for anyone in the local community or further afield, as it is a relaxed, friendly environment that caters for all. The new menu is excellent and offers traditional British food at an affordable price.

Henger Barbers, Sheffield City Centre

Situated on West Street, in one of Sheffield City Centre’s busier locations, Henger barbershop may be easily missed by many as it sits amongst some larger establishments, but once found, it is certainly a place to be remembered and bookmarked for those resident in Sheffield and also those who may be intermittent visitors.

Greeted with a smile and a warm hello on entry, the girls in the shop, and of course the owner David, make you feel very welcome, whether it be your first or one hundred and first visit!

If the barbershop is busy, which being popular it often is, you are offered a seat and a drink, ranging from speciality coffees, to kids drinks to a beer if that’s your tipple!

Many people wait for their favourite barber and many are happy to be seen by any of the 4 or 5 skilled barbers on shift. Once seated, you are made to feel very comfortable and encouraged to discuss any new styles you may wish to try, with an honest opinion and specialist advice from the barber if required and a perfect cut guaranteed.

The quality of hair cut from Henger is second to none; the service is exemplary and the atmosphere in the barbershop is great. With music playing, conversation flowing and the news on the TV in the background, everyone is made to feel at home and allowed to relax in what is an ever modernising and trend setting environment.

Last but not least, the price is very competitive. With student discounts, OAP offers and loyalty rewards, the pricing at Henger is spot on and the service is one that could be expected in a far pricier barbershop in the city centre!

To many, having a haircut is a necessity, to others it’s a chore but at Henger, it’s always a pleasure!

Our team have visited Henger for a number of years and continue to do so.
